UK Contract Chemical Manufacturing
Independent guidance on outsourced chemical production, from choosing a manufacturer to managing the contract - plus a free directory of UK contract and toll manufacturers.
Contract chemical manufacturing - also called toll manufacturing - is where one business outsources the production of a chemical formulation to a specialist manufacturer, rather than producing it in-house. It's a common route for businesses that don't have their own production facility, need to scale beyond what they can make themselves, or want to free up capacity for other products.
Chemical Connections is an independent, UK-focused resource covering how contract manufacturing works in practice: the processes manufacturers offer, how to prepare a brief and choose a supplier, and what to expect from the contract itself. It sits alongside a separate directory of UK contract and toll manufacturers, searchable by process, industry and capability.

Key points
- Contract manufacturing suits businesses without their own production facility, or those looking to scale beyond in-house capacity.
- Choosing the right manufacturer depends on the process required, batch size, and quality and regulatory requirements - not just price.
- Contracts, quality agreements and confidentiality terms matter as much as the manufacturing process itself.
- This site is independent of any manufacturer listed in the linked directory.
- The linked directory covers UK manufacturers only, on the basis that UK capability is the part buyers find hardest to identify.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Chemical Connections a manufacturer directory?
No - this site is independent guidance and reference content. The directory of UK contract and toll manufacturers is a separate, linked resource.
Is this guidance specific to one industry?
No - contract chemical manufacturing spans many sectors, including cleaning and hygiene products, cosmetics and personal care, industrial and specialty chemicals, and more. Guidance on this site is general unless a page states otherwise.
Do you recommend specific manufacturers?
No - this site doesn't rank or endorse individual manufacturers. Use the linked directory to search by process, industry and capability, and carry out your own due diligence before committing to a supplier.
Why does this site only cover UK manufacturers?
Because UK capability is the part that's hard to find. Contract manufacturing is rarely marketed - most manufacturers fill their capacity through repeat business and word of mouth - so a buyer searching cold often sees overseas options first, and reads that as the market rather than as the search. Covering the UK properly, and staying independent of the manufacturers in it, is more useful than covering everywhere thinly.
That isn't a claim that UK production is always the right answer. On price alone it often isn't, and capacity is tighter than it was - see moving chemical production back to the UK. It's a claim that it should be a comparison rather than a default. See about Chemical Connections for more on why that matters.
